The first non-stop scheduled service from the UK to Australia will start next March. The service from London Heathrow to Perth, operated by a Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner, will take about 18 hours. The flight then goes on to Melbourne This will further open up Perth as a key destination and gateway to Australia and ideal for a stopover on the way east.

We are all aware of the many attractions of Venice and the huge numbers of tourists who visit ‘La Serinissima’ every year. Many arriving these days on huge cruise ships with several thousand passengers, good for business maybe but leading to many issues for Venetians. On a very much smaller scale Orkney also has it attractions for visitors, Kirkwall the capital, St Magnus Cathedral, the Italian Chapel and Skara Brae. This summer it is estimated that up to 120,000 cruise ship passengers will stop and visit the archipelago. Bear in mind that the population of Orkney is just 22,000 and Kirkwall 9000. Overwhelming numbers of visitors who are in danger of shattering the peace of Orkney, one of its great attractions. Again good for the local Orcadian economy but is the tourist industry once again in danger of spoiling the very destinations and sites we are so interested in visiting.
